Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has recently converted $1.6 million worth of meme coins into Ether (ETH), earmarked for charitable causes. According to blockchain analytics firm Spot On Chain, Buterin sold significant portions of various meme coins, including Moo Deng (MOODENG) worth $982,800, Monsterra (MSTR) worth $231,000, and Ethereum Is Good (EBULL) valued at $183,000.
In addition to these, Buterin also offloaded smaller holdings of meme coins like Popcat (POPCAT), Fwog (FWOG), and vitalek buteren (VITALIK), continuing his trend of converting such tokens into funds for donation.
Buterin Sells $2.78M Worth of Meme Coins
This recent sale brings Buterin’s total meme coin sales to $2.78 million, out of which he has already donated $884,000 to charitable organizations over the last nine days. Despite his involvement, Buterin has urged meme coin creators to donate directly to causes instead of sending him tokens.
Earlier, on October 7, Buterin donated 10 billion meme coin tokens to a charitable organization focused on developing anti-airborne-disease technology. He emphasized his belief that meme coins should aim to have a positive impact on the world.
In August, he also donated various animal-themed meme coins to the Effective Altruism Funds’ Animal Welfare Fund, underscoring his commitment to making meme coins a force for good.
Future Donations on the Horizon
Buterin’s portfolio still contains around $2.4 million in MOODENG tokens and smaller amounts of other meme coins like Neiro (NEIRO), Monsterra (MSTR), and Degen (DEGEN), suggesting that additional charitable contributions may be forthcoming.
While Buterin has expressed support for the potential of meme coins to contribute positively, he has been vocal in his criticism of celebrity-themed meme coins that primarily benefit celebrities and early investors.
Nobel Prize Speculation for Buterin
Buterin’s philanthropic activities, alongside his ongoing contributions to Ethereum, have led notable economists like Tyler Cowen and Alex Tabarrok to consider him a potential candidate for the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences.
During an episode of the Marginal Revolution podcast on October 8, Cowen praised Buterin for creating Ethereum and even challenging the Mises regression theorem through his work on cryptocurrency. Tabarrok echoed these sentiments, comparing the transition of Ethereum from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake to changing car tires while the vehicle is still moving—a nod to Buterin’s technical prowess and vision.
Both economists acknowledged Buterin’s significant contributions, comparing his achievements to those of Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin, with Cowen stating that Buterin is one of the most influential figures in the crypto and blockchain space.
