CZ Reacts to Biden’s Pardon Decision: “Wouldn’t Mind a Pardon”

Changpeng Zhao (CZ), co-founder of Binance, stirred interest in the crypto community with a cryptic post on X (formerly Twitter), addressing President Joe Biden’s controversial decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden.

CZ, responding to a comment on December 2, stated, “No wish to be CEO again. But definitely wouldn’t mind a pardon.”

CZ Open to Forgiveness but Not Returning as CEO

The conversation began when John Lilic, CEO of Telos, suggested on X that President-elect Donald Trump should consider pardoning CZ. Lilic argued that a pardon could not only rehabilitate CZ’s standing but also accelerate Binance’s recovery and bolster the entire cryptocurrency industry.

CZ, however, downplayed the idea of returning to his former role at Binance, emphasizing he had no desire to be CEO again but would welcome a pardon.

When another user proposed CZ be appointed to lead a U.S. cryptocurrency division, he clarified:

“Not US citizen etc. But always happy to help where I can.”

CZ’s Legal Troubles: A Timeline

CZ’s comments come against the backdrop of his recent legal issues. In April 2024, CZ pleaded guilty to violating U.S. anti-money laundering (AML) laws, leading to:

  • A 4-month prison sentence, of which he served 118 days.
  • A personal fine of $50 million.
  • Binance facing $4.3 billion in fines for its role in facilitating illicit transactions under his leadership.

CZ’s early release in September 2024, under federal sentencing guidelines, marked the beginning of his reintegration into the cryptocurrency industry.

First Public Appearance at Binance Blockchain Week 2024

CZ made his post-prison debut at Binance Blockchain Week 2024, held in Dubai. Reflecting on his sentence, CZ provided candid insights:

“If you ask one side, they will say, no, it’s too easy. If you ask the other, my side, they would be like, too harsh.”

The crypto mogul, whose personal fortune exceeds $60 billion, highlighted that his focus remains on the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem rather than personal titles or leadership roles.

Market and Industry Impact

CZ’s next moves are highly anticipated as they could influence both Binance’s trajectory and the performance of Binance Coin (BNB). Despite legal challenges, CZ’s presence continues to resonate within the crypto community, with his leadership seen as pivotal to the industry’s growth.
