Rep. Wiley Nickel Criticizes Trump Over Crypto Stance at Harris Town Hall Event

During the recent Crypto For Harris town hall, Congressman Wiley Nickel (D-NC) sharply criticized Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump for his inconsistent stance on cryptocurrency. At the event, which was the inaugural gathering of the Democratic crypto collective, Nickel pointed out Trump’s past remarks where he labeled digital assets like Bitcoin as scams.

Nickel Calls Out Trump’s Inconsistent Views on Crypto

“There’s only one person running for president who has called crypto a scam, and that’s Donald Trump,” Nickel stated, referring to Trump’s 2019 social media posts that dismissed cryptocurrencies as volatile and illegitimate. Trump had tweeted, “I am not a fan of Bitcoin and other Cryptocurrencies, which are not money, and whose value is highly volatile and based on thin air.”

Nickel didn’t hold back, continuing, “Donald Trump is just totally full of sh-t. If you don’t believe me, ask his vice president and he’ll tell you the same thing,” referencing Trump’s current running mate, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, who has faced criticism for his changing stance on the former president.

Crypto as a Central Issue in the Upcoming Election

As the U.S. presidential election approaches, cryptocurrency regulation has emerged as a key issue. While Trump has shown more support for digital assets in recent months, Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, have been less vocal on the topic. However, the Democratic crypto collective, Crypto For Harris, is actively working to rally support for progressive blockchain policies.

Nickel, a member of the digital assets subcommittee of the House Financial Service Committee, has been a strong advocate for crypto-friendly legislation. He recently co-sponsored the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act (FIT21) and played a role in overturning the SEC’s controversial staff accounting bulletin, SAB121.

“We’re here to break the narrative that digital assets and blockchain technology are partisan issues,” Nickel said during the town hall. “Turning this into a political football is only going to set us back decades in Congress.”
