The Worldcoin Foundation has announced the launch of World ID orb verifications in Austria, marking a significant expansion of its operations within Europe.
Introducing World ID Verification in Austria
In a recent blog post, the foundation highlighted its aim to improve access to its innovative “proof of humanness” technology in Austria. The introduction of eyeball-scanning orbs in various locations around Vienna enables residents over 18 to authenticate their unique World IDs, integrating them into the Worldcoin network.
Expansion Across Europe
Austria’s inclusion follows the successful implementation of similar technologies in neighboring Germany, reinforcing Worldcoin’s growing footprint across Europe.
Regulatory Challenges in Europe
Despite these advancements, Worldcoin faces regulatory challenges. Spain has extended its ban on Worldcoin pending the outcome of a GDPR audit, while Portugal has temporarily halted biometric data collection due to privacy concerns.
User Reception and Privacy Measures
The Worldcoin Foundation remains optimistic, citing favorable user feedback. In a 2024 survey, 82% of 21,000 World ID holders in Spain supported the technology, and in Portugal, 77% of 19,000 respondents saw potential benefits for their digital interactions.
To address privacy concerns, Worldcoin has introduced initiatives like “Personal Custody” to enhance users’ control over their biometric data.
Future Developments: World Chain
Looking ahead, Worldcoin’s upcoming Layer 2 network, World Chain, promises greater scalability and efficiency. A developer preview is already available, with a mainnet launch anticipated later this summer. Built on Ethereum’s Superchain framework, World Chain aims to be permissionless, open source, and community-governed.
Partnership with Alchemy
In a move to bolster its infrastructure, Worldcoin partnered with web3 platform Alchemy on June 26. This collaboration will provide Worldcoin developers with essential tools and infrastructure to build the new World Chain blockchain, focusing on human verification, digital identity, and decentralized applications while maintaining stringent privacy and security standards.
