EthCC 7 Kicks Off in Brussels, Showcasing Ethereum’s Future

The seventh Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC) began on July 8 in Brussels, Belgium, drawing together developers, researchers, and enthusiasts from around the world. As the largest annual European Ethereum event, EthCC serves as a platform for pivotal discussions and insights into the future of decentralized finance (DeFi) and Web3 social networks.

A Historic and Politically Significant Venue

Hosting the conference in Brussels, a city rich in history and culture, and the de facto capital of the European Union, underscores the significance of the event. Brussels is home to major EU institutions such as the European Commission, the European Parliament, and the European Council, providing a fitting backdrop for discussions on technological advancements with global implications.

Keynote Speakers and Major Announcements

The conference began with Stani Kulechov’s presentation on how Web3 social platforms and DeFi aim to empower communities. Kulechov highlighted DeFi’s potential as a transparent and borderless economy that transcends geographical and socio-economic barriers. “DeFi is, in its nature, a transparent, borderless economy. It allows you to transact no matter your background. It has grown significantly and it’s here to stay,” Kulechov stated.

Sergey Nazarov, co-founder of Chainlink, discussed the next stage of DeFi’s growth, emphasizing the role of decentralized oracle networks. His insights pointed towards a future where these networks drive innovation and reliability in the DeFi space.

New Tools and Innovations

The event also saw significant launches and updates from various projects. Decentralized exchange (DEX) aggregator 1inch Labs introduced the 1inch Developer Portal, a tool designed to enhance Web3 developers’ efficiency by offering better RPC blockchain interactions without needing to run their own nodes.

Additionally, the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) announced a refreshed brand aesthetic while maintaining its recognizable logo. The updated website experience, powered by the Thorin design system, aims to provide a more user-friendly interface for managing blockchain-based naming protocols.

Emphasis on Collaboration and Research

Raffi Sapire, Chief Operating Officer of the Uniswap Foundation, addressed the challenges faced by researchers in the DeFi space. She stressed the importance of integrating research into the broader DeFi ecosystem and transitioning theoretical concepts into practical applications. “Collaboration is key for researchers to move their research forward and progress the DeFi space. When I think of DeFi in terms of Uniswap, we are thinking about how to onboard the next million users,” Sapire remarked.

Sapire highlighted the necessity of cross-chain and cross-protocol collaborations to drive innovation and scalability in DeFi. She argued that isolated research efforts often fail to address the complex and interconnected nature of blockchain systems, advocating for collaborative approaches to create robust and scalable solutions.

Setting the Tone for Future Discussions

The first day of EthCC underscored the advancements in DeFi and Web3 technologies, with leaders in the Ethereum space emphasizing the democratization of access and empowerment of individuals. The sessions set an optimistic tone for the remainder of the conference, promising further insights and innovations from the brightest minds in the Ethereum and blockchain communities.

Overall, the first day of EthCC 7 showcased the immense potential and collaborative spirit that define the Ethereum community, setting a high standard for the discussions and developments to follow in the coming days.
