Steven Nerayoff, a former advisor to Ethereum, has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government, demanding $9.6 billion in damages.
Nerayoff alleges that he suffered unjust accusations and mistreatment by federal agents between 2019 and 2023, prompting him to seek restitution through legal channels.
The lawsuit, initiated under the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA), centers on what Nerayoff claims were wrongful actions stemming from a 2019 extortion charge levied against him. The charge implicated him and an associate in an alleged scheme to extort millions of dollars in Ethereum tokens and cash from a cryptocurrency company by threatening its destruction.
According to a report by FOX Business journalist Eleanor Terrett, Nerayoff asserts that federal agents pursued baseless charges against him, despite lacking substantial evidence. The lawsuit alleges that some agents engaged in harassment, intimidation, and even fabrication of evidence to support the extortion charges.
Nerayoff’s legal team emphasizes the significant damage inflicted on his reputation and business ventures as a result of these unfounded accusations, justifying the pursuit of legal recourse against the federal authorities.
